She has abandoned me, broken my heart, lied about me and given me cold, deadly glares that made me think she wished I were dead. Mom has also made me feel loved and special, given me a sense of humor and made me feel like a beautiful person." With a warm conversational tone, Laurie Kast-Klein describes her tumultuous childhood and the lack of care demonstrated by the Michigan foster care system. From the loving atmosphere of her grandparents' home to a variety of abusive foster care homes, Laurie has survived and ultimately flourished. Her story is heartfelt and heartbreaking, but her words will inspire you. Laurie Kast-Klein has been involved in advocacy for abused women and children, and she currently lives with her family in Michigan.

To Whom It May Concern a memoir of a foster child eBook Laurie KastKlein

I always feel great admiration for those that have been victimized and/or suffered an injustice in some way and somehow manage to find their voice and speak up for others who may be going through similar things or worse! I try to do the same with my own history and use it to help others. In this way, we take something meant for evil and try to use it for good. It doesn't take away the pain or the memories but it does make them easier to bear.
I gave this book 5 stars because it is well written and it definitely held my attention. I read it cover to cover in one day! The storyline is easy to follow even though the author has a large family with many siblings, step-siblings, grandparents, and other relatives in addition to the foster parents entrusted with their care. She also went on to marry and have children and grandchildren which is wonderful and yet further proof that she is a survivor! I admire her strength in that despite not having been raised consistently in a stable home by her parents, she knows what children need and made sure to provide these things for her own children even though she didn't have those needs met herself.
I was and am appalled that foster children are often further victimized by the very system created to rescue them from dysfunction , neglect or abuse! This system is clearly broken and needs urgent attention in so many ways. I would imagine that improvements are needed at all levels. There needs to be more and better trained case workers with manageable caseloads. Caseworkers need to be paid what they are worth and given the support they need to do their job well.
Foster parents need to also be well trained and subjected to regular check ins. The children receiving care must receive regular medical check ups and psychological help as needed. When case workers visit the children they should insist on talking to them without the foster parents present in order to get a better sense of how the children are being treated. ASK THE HARD QUESTIONS and LISTEN to the answers as well as OBSERVE the child's expressions, mannerisms etc.
It is EVERYONE'S responsibility to protect the children!

To Whom It May Concern a memoir of a foster child eBook Laurie KastKlein Reviews

So many of us come from abusive homes and live with the painful memories, writing helps to start the healing process. Thank you for your story, it helps to know we are not alone... we can make a difference one child at a time. I recommend this book to everyone.....
Although a little on the simple side of writing, her story gives us a good idea about the failures that happened again and again within the Michigan foster care system during the 60s and 70s. Quick and highly informative read. Gives me whole new appreciation for the plights of children who so desperately seeking a loving and stable homes.
I only wish that the characters were introduced clearly and maybe a family tree written in the front pages it was very hard to keep track of the eight plus kids. Then adding in the step children, it made it really hard to follow.
I know this.Must have been hard to recount. Praise the writer for doing so and showing people that they need to be the ones to take action. We can't sit by waiting for someone else to do it.
I loved the whole book! Great writing style and I read it in one evening. I just couldn't put it down. My mom was abused by a wealthy, crazed aunt in the 1940's for many years. It was so horrific, she could hardly talk about it. She felt she would have a complete breakdown if she wrote a book. She took most of her secrets to her grave. She was a wonderful, caring, generous, loving person and helped many of the abused and neglected children that she taught for many years. Thank you for sharing your story! It's definitely a 5 star book!!!

Too many children are abused in America and many of them no one hears about. It is such a sad thing to even think about. Laurie Kast-Klein tells of the many trials she and her siblings had to overcome (some of which are still bothering her). Thanks Laurie for letting others see how many foster children and treated. Most of us think these children are better off in foster care, but they never REALLY know what the children have to go through while growing into adults.
Even though this book jumped from past to present and one character to another, I can see
that it had to be told in this manner for the reader to understand how horrible each
incident was different from one another but yet the same. I was shocked to hear about situations
that actually occur in foster homes. I had heard rumors but couldn't believe it actually
was happening. My heart goes out to those children who had to endure such treatment
at the hands of the monsters who were supposed to take care of them.
I'm sure this had to be a most difficult book to write but it is written with such honesty
and heart that I, as a reader, was in tears.
I must begin by saying that I am personally acquainted with the author as well as some of her family. I bought this book with the intention of reading it sometime during the summer. I however, made the mistake of "just taking a peek". I was hooked and could not put this book down. It is so well written and the story is so heart breaking as well as heart warming. I am indeed appalled at the state of Michigan for allowing such abuse to continue when it should have never occurred in the first place. Laurie has inspired me to do what I can to make positive changes in our foster care systm. I know that after you read this story of her lfe growing up in an intolerable system, you two will see the need to get involved. If you live outside Michigan, I am sure that you will find the same injustices in your state's system. Children are such precious gifts and not one should have to endure such pain. Let me further add that Laurie has grown into a beautiful woman and has raised her children in a loving atmosphere. Given her early life,it is reasonable to expect that his would not happen. I absolutely,100%,encourage you to get a copy of this book. I will go so far as to say,it could change your way of thinking. If you are one of those who thinks that the system is "okay", you will change your mind. Great job Laurie. I eagerly await your next story. A little bird told me it might be in the works !!!
